iOS Devices Using a Lightning-to-Headphone Adapter Cable.

  1. Plug the Lightning-to-headphone adapter cable (sold separately) into your device’s Lightning port. We recommend using an MFi certified cable to ensure it will work.
  2. Plug the male end of the HX-Mi cable into the female 3.5 mm jack of the Lightning-to-headphone adapter cable.
  3. Take the output cable from your microphone or wireless receiver and plug it into the jack marked “ECM-MIC” on the HX-Mi.
  4. Make sure your microphone or wireless system is on and set up properly. Now you are ready to record audio or video with the app of your choice on your iOS device.
  5. OPTIONAL: Plug headphones or earbuds into the jack marked “SPK” on the HX-Mi to listen back to your recordings. You may also be able to live-monitor audio while recording or streaming IF the app allows for this feature.

TIP: If you are not using headphones, remember to unplug the Lightning-to-headphone adapter cable from your phone BEFORE trying to listen back to your audio. Otherwise audio will not be heard.

Computers / Laptops

The HX-Mi cable will only work with computers that have a combination headphone / microphone input jack. Most current model Windows laptops, Mac laptops and iMacs do use this type of jack. If unsure, check your computer’s manual or contact the manufacturer.

  1. Plug the male end of the HX-Mi cable into the headphone jack of your computer.
  2. Take the output cable from your microphone or wireless receiver and plug it into the jack marked “ECM-MIC” on the HX-Mi.
  3. Make sure your microphone or wireless system is on and set up properly.
  4. Conduct a test with the audio/video/conferencing software you intend to use to make sure audio is coming through from your microphone.
  5. If audio is not working, you may need to change settings in the software and/or in the operating system in order to use an external microphone.
  6. OPTIONAL: Plug headphones or earbuds into the jack marked “SPK” on the HX-Mi to listen back to your recordings. You may also be able to live-monitor audio while recording or streaming IF the software allows for this feature.

Your computer should automatically detect when an external microphone is connected to your headphone jack (via the HX-Mi cable in this case). However, sometimes the computer fails to do this and there’s not much you can do. This is everything to do with your computer’s hardware or software, and is not a problem with the HX-Mi cable.

Other times, getting things to work requires more effort. You may need to change the audio settings in the operating system and/or in the software you are using. Unfortunately, changing these settings on your computer is beyond the scope of this tutorial.

Our HX-Mi cables are tested extensively upon leaving the factory to ensure they work. If things are not working as expected, it’s unlikely to be due to a faulty HX-Mi cable. However, it’s not a complete impossibility. So, if you think you really do have a faulty HX-Mi cable, contact our support.
